Mass anonymization of images and data sovereignty
In georeferenced data capture and image processing projects, it is common for personal data to appear and, therefore, such data must be handled with appropriate safeguards and in compliance with privacy and data protection rights.
Sectors such as mobility, logistics, and urban planning use mass image capture systems in public spaces, which incidentally collect personal data such as people’s faces or vehicle license plates. Since this data is not part of the purpose of the processing, it must be anonymized.
Drawing on our experience in the capture and large-scale management of images for the creation of inventories and cartographies, our commitment to compliance with data protection regulations, and our certification under the ISO/IEC 27001 information security standard, we offer our clients a personal data anonymization service for images. Depending on the requirements, it is possible to anonymize faces and license plates, as in mobile mapping scenarios, or to limit anonymization exclusively to faces, as in Low Emission Zone access control.
SafeMoMa is Geograma’s service specialized in the anonymization of large image datasets, designed to facilitate compliance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Law 34/2002 on Information Society Services and Electronic Commerce (LSSI-CE). It enables our clients to work securely with large volumes of images, reducing the risk surface and strengthening data protection for the development of high-quality services.
Real and Effective Anonymization
IN MOBILE MAPPING IMAGES, VARIOUS ELEMENTS MAY APPEAR THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE IDENTIFICATION OF A PERSON, SUCH AS LOCATION, CONTEXT, CLOTHING, PHYSICAL BUILD, OR PROXIMITY TO A SPECIFIC PLACE.
FOR THIS REASON, THE TECHNICAL MEASURES TO BE APPLIED SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED EXCLUSIVELY TO PIXELATING THE FACE OR THE LICENSE PLATE.
ANONYMIZATION CONSISTS OF UNDERSTANDING WHICH ELEMENTS MAY MAKE A PERSON IDENTIFIABLE AND APPLYING SUFFICIENT MEASURES TO REASONABLY AND EFFECTIVELY PREVENT THEIR IDENTIFICATION.
This approach makes it possible to work with anonymized or highly de-identified information, minimizing the legal and technical risks associated with processing and strengthening respect for the rights of the individuals concerned.
DATA READY FOR USE
In this way, once anonymized, the captured datasets can be used while reducing the risks associated with personal data processing and facilitating compliance with data protection regulations for the generation of cartographies and digital twins, as well as for asset inventory and management, access control to Low Emission Zones (LEZ), data upload to SaaS platforms, and support for engineering projects, among other applications.
Where appropriate, they may also be published in data spaces, enabling their reuse by different stakeholders with full safeguards.
To make this possible, we are one of the first companies nationwide to offer, under different processing models, an image dataset obfuscation service for data captured using technologies such as mobile mapping, drones, or laser scanning:
- Batch processing
- Integration via asynchronous API
- On-premise licensed application
In addition, in cases involving API-based or batch processing, the entire processing cycle is carried out within Geograma’s infrastructure or that of its subprocessors, with data centers located within EU territory, ensuring that:
- Data is not disclosed to third parties.
- Data is not transferred outside the European Union.
In this way, the client retains full control over their data, using a solution aligned with privacy, security, and data protection requirements.
